Welcome to our new Respiratory website! The Respiratory unit in Faculty of Medicine, UiTM had a humble beginning in 2007 in Selayang Hospital. Fast forward 6 years in 2013, the Respiratory unit now consists of 3 respiratory physicians, 2 respiratory specialists in training, 2 respiratory physiotherapists, 5 respiratory MLTs and 2 research assistants covering Selayang Hospital, Sg Buloh Hospital and Sabak Bernam Hospital.

We also now provide various services expected of a fully functioning Respiratory unit including full lung function testing, full PSG sleep study, bronchoscopy, pleuroscopy and EBUS. The unit also provides an open spirometry service for General Practitioners to refer their patients for spirometry testing.

Clinics are conducted in both Selayang and Sg Buloh campuses twice a week. We are fortunate to have the support of respiratory physiotherapist and dietician at our clinic to advice patients with chronic lung disease. There are also 16 in-patients respiratory beds in Selayang Hospital managed by our Respiratory team.

The Respiratory Unit had been accredited as a Training Centre for Respiratory  Medicine in 2010. Education and research are integral part of any training center and various activities are held regularly such as weekly X ray meeting, journal club and monthly Respiratory CPC.  The unit had also conducted workshops on sleep scoring, asthma and COPD, which have proved to be very popular among primary care physicians and junior doctors. Please browse our website regularly for future workshops/courses.

This unit also plays an active role in research. Over 25 clinical trials and basic science research have been or are currently being conducted. The results have been published and presented in national and international conferences. Last year proved to be a proud moment for our unit when Dr Ahmad Izuanuddin Ismail won the first runner up in the Best Oral Presentation at the APSR Congress 2012 in Hong Kong.  We are also fortunate to have received support from the Malaysian Thoracic Society (MTS) when we were awarded the MTS Research Grant amounting to RM 100,000 for the project on Acute Exacerbation in COPD. This study involves 10 hospitals around the country and will be a platform for further collaborative research among the respiratory units in the country.

I hope you enjoy browsing this website and thank you for your support.
